Top recommendations from our vibrant, romantic city.

Want to visit Athens but don’t know what’s hot in LGBTQ spaces? In this article we offer you personalized recommendations on how to make the most of your time keeping it fun, safe and free. This is LGBTQ+ Athens.

Cafes, restaurants, bars

A rule of thumb is that every vegan and vegetarian shop is by default an LGBTQ safe space for you. For downtown coffee, we suggest Wild Souls, where you can enjoy your vegan iced latte or matcha. You can also try out regional sweet delights such as halva. Anana also offers premium coffee and vegan snacks as well as a hip, cozy vibe for you to have endless conversations at their patio. Beaver in Gazi is where you’ll make new friends as an all day women (mostly lesbian) curated space. But if you are looking for true romance, Yiasmi in the historical area of Plaka is packed with colors, flowers and a neoclassical essence.

For restaurants we suggest Galiantra, a street food place at Metaxourgeio for the best ever meatball sandwiches framed by an awesome urban setting.

Right next to Galiantra you can find Ble Papagalos, a romantic bar that exudes a warm jazzy feeling. Additionally we suggest Kryfto in the gorgeous area of Kallimarmaro and Bel Rey in Koukaki for delicious cocktails.

Areas to hang out

It’s safe to say that in hip areas such as Pagrati, Kypseli, Kerameikos/Gazi and Petralona you will have a perfect time no matter where you go. Exarcheia is the most famous destination for edgier, alternative travelers where you will also find a bunch of cafes, vegan kitchens, self administered shops, vintage stores, art galleries and a bunch of street art. This is where you’ll meet artists and thinkers of all kinds.

For outdoor chilling, we suggest the park of Stavros Niarchos Foundation in southern Athens which is reachable by shuttle bus as well as public transport. If you visit in the summer, there are a bunch of cultural events and activities such as concerts and open air movie screenings to choose from. Eleftherias park near Athens Concert Hall is where the youth hangs out. Bring your speaker and picnic blanket and enjoy the sun!

Activities

Nightlife

In Gazi, the most famous clubs that make the top of our list are Shamone and Sodade2, referring mostly but not nearly exclusively to gay men, while for a younger and more mixed crowd there is S-Cape. All clubs mentioned mostly play pop and hip hop music but after hours turn into an all time fave Greek party. For more alternative rock sound, visit Noiz, a bar nearby frequented by mostly women and lesbians.

Drag shows are sometimes offered in the clubs described above and are usually held in Greek. For a more authentic experience, head to Koukles in the Syggrou Fix area, an all time classic venue full of shows that pay homage to greek pop culture.

Events

Athens Pride is usually held between the first and second week of June every year. The parade takes place in the heart of Athens on Saturday while prior to that, a Pride Week full of parties and events all around the city invites you to celebrate along until the big day.

Onasis Stegi in the Syggrou Fix area is a cultural center with a schedule packed with performances, exhibitions and talks also offered in English about burning social issues such as identity, immigration and human rights. Close to the venue, the National Museum for Cotemporary art (EMST) is also a hub about such topics, offering workshops as well as showcasing important artists from all walks of life.

Walks

In the city centre, grabbing a coffee or a refreshing drink and walking around Zappeion and the National Garden is a common activity for Athenian folks. Walking around the colorful, historical area of Plaka on a sunny day is also a favorite route where you can take amazing pictures in front of beautiful residential homes and picturesque streets. The ancient ruins of the Roman Forum and the Acropolis offer an exciting glimpse to the past.
